When build up of plaque occurs in the blood vessels, which causes narrowing, eventually the artery becomes so closed off the blood can no longer move through. These deposits typically consist of calcium and also some heavy metals.
One theory is EDTA (the chemical compound used in chelation therapy), which binds to calcium (pulls it off), creates a liquid substance, and carries it out, thus reducing the calcium deposit.
A second more likely theory is EDTA, binds to metals such as lead and cadmium in the bloodstream where they would be carried to arterial locations and stored. Like calcium, storage of these metals in the bloodstream is also inflammatory to the body. To soothe the blood vessel, the body creates plaque to protect the vessel from breaking. The chelating action of the EDTA reduces the amount of oxidation material inside the bloodstream and artery, carries it away, and decreases inflammation.
Another part of this theory is that certain enzymes in the body, known as the "workers" that repair tissue, help reduce inflammation, fight off infection, etc. Most enzymes contain a certain mineral compound that would be used to heal. If you are deficient in this particular mineral, the heavy metals can step in to "replace" the mineral. Enzymes that possess metals instead of minerals will function poorly and fail to perform the "clean up" needed for the repair to the artery or other area in the body that is affected.
In 2007, it was estimated that 111,000 people used chelation therapy to treat heart and other diseases. As there were a number of anecdotal reports of people using this therapy, a couple of agencies co-sponsored a ten-year, placebo-controlled, double-blind study with 1708 participants age 50 and over who had experienced a heart attack, to determine whether using EDTA chelation and/or high-dose vitamin therapy is effective for treating coronary heart disease. Study concluded that using these methods were associated with a significant lowered rate of reduced risk from causes of cardiac events including heart attack, stroke, hospitalization for angina, coronary vascularization or death from any cause. EDTA therapy showed a tremendous benefit for correcting the damage from any kind of coronary event and clean out the arteries, and allow patients to live a much healthier and happier life without surgery and medication.
